چکیده

The magnetometer investigation aboard the NEAR-Shoemaker spacecraft has obtained extensive magnetic field observations throughout the 433 Eros environment, from distances in excess of 100,000 km to those conducted after landing on 12 February 2001. We report the apparent absence of global scale magnetization at this asteroid (H < 0.005 A · m−1; natural remanent magnetization per kilogram < 1.9 × 10−6 A · m2 · kg−1), orders of magnitude less than the intense magnetization attributed to S-class asteroids Gaspra and Braille. The extremely low magnetization state of 433 Eros places this object significantly below the levels generally associated with LL chondrites and undifferentiated primitive bodies, challenging our current understanding of the meteorite–asteroid connection. c © 2002 Elsevier Science (USA)

Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous: Mission Summary

On February 14, 2000, the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous spacecraft (NEAR Shoemaker) began the first orbital study of an asteroid, the near-Earth object 433 Eros. Almost a year later, on February 12, 2001, NEAR Shoemaker completed its mission by landing on the asteroid and acquiring data from its surface. NEAR Shoemaker’s intensive study has found an average density of 2.67 ± 0.03, almost unifo...

The Surface Roughness of ( 433 ) Eros as Measured by Thermal - Infrared

In planetary science, surface roughness is regarded to be a measure of surface irregularity at small spatial scales, and causes the thermal-infrared beaming effect (i.e. re-radiation of absorbed sunlight back towards to the Sun). Typically, surface roughness exhibits a degeneracy with thermal inertia when thermophysical models are fitted to disc-integrated thermal-infrared observations of aster...

The Orbital Dynamics Environment of 433 Eros: A Case Study for Future Asteroid Missions

The Near-Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR)–Shoemaker mission was a milestone in that it represented the practical navigation of a spacecraft in the most severely perturbed orbital environment (relative to the standard two-body problem) ever experienced by a spacecraft. Furthermore, all future asteroid orbital missions will encounter environments similar, in some way, to the environment encounter...

Laser altimetry of small-scale features on 433 Eros from NEAR-Shoemaker.

During the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR)-Shoemaker's low-altitude flyover of asteroid 433 Eros, observations by the NEAR Laser Rangefinder (NLR) have helped to characterize small-scale surface features. On scales from meters to hundreds of meters, the surface has a fractal structure with roughness dominated by blocks, structural features, and walls of small craters. This fractal structu...

Thrust faults and the near‐surface strength of asteroid 433 Eros

[1] NEAR Shoemaker images reveal widespread occurrence of tectonic landforms on asteroid 433 Eros. Hinks Dorsum is a ridge that extends for about 18 km around the asteroid and strongly resembles thrust fault structures on the terrestrial planets. Tectonic landforms can provide information on the mechanical properties of asteroids, a subject of much controversy. Modeling constrained by topograph...
